Семейство Ирисовые — Iridaceae. Ирис (Касатик) кожистый — многолетнее травянистое корневищное растение до 25-35cm высотой. Листья с сизым восковым налетом, серповидно-изогнутые. Стебель с 1-2 цветками. Трубочка околоцветника в несколько раз длиннее завязи.
Основная часть ареала расположена в северо-западной и западной частях Прикаспийской низменности. Растет на солонцеватых почвах по откосам, на сухих плато, среди пустынно-степного разнотравья, иногда заходит на пески. Вид отличается повышенной жизненностью и высокой конкурентоспособностью, полиморфностью и полихромностью цветков.
Название рода происходит от древнегреческого слова "радуга" — в палитре ирисов есть даже коричневый и черный цвета. Род в культуре уже несколько веков, выведено множество сортов. По изяществу формы, разнообразию красок и аромату ирисы соперничают с орхидеями.

Iris scariosa (Ирис кожистый). Волгоградская область, оз. Эльтон, апрель 2013. Вроде не было еще на форуме темы с фотографиями этого вида.
